About PRT

A near-jazz trio built for the live moment.

PRT strives for an intimate, relatively unscripted music that thrives in small places and dark corners.

The trio

The Pete Roth Trio, featuring Pete on guitar, Mike Pratt on bass, and the incomparable Bill Bruford on drums, offers a near-jazz experience that is intimate, improvised, and deeply interactive.

The music unfolds as a conversation between players and audience, where every performance becomes a unique exploration of sound, texture, and connection.

Roth's original compositions, the Trio's collaborative works, and their reinterpretations of masterworks such as Dvorak's Largo from Symphony No. 9 are gateways into a creative world that reshapes what the guitar trio format can achieve.

Guitar

Pete Roth

Pete Roth is a versatile artist and accomplished session guitarist. Born in Germany, he began playing guitar at the age of 11 in a family deeply rooted in music.

His early musical language was shaped by the emotional directness of blues and the energy of rock. Later, after moving to England to study jazz, he immersed himself in a wider vocabulary influenced by players such as Joe Pass, John Scofield, and Julian Lage.

Before forming this trio, Pete recorded two albums as a leader for MGP Records and built a broad career across live bands, studio sessions, theatre productions, tribute work, and record label collaborations.

The Pete Roth Trio is his first trio adventure: a space for intricate melodies, agile rhythms, electric detail, and compositions that leave room for close listening and spontaneous exchange.

Bass

Mike Pratt

Mike Pratt is a double bass and bass guitar player, composer, and producer based in London.

Early in his career he was drawn to funk, acid jazz, fusion, and the music of Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Steps Ahead, John Scofield, Charles Mingus, and Duke Ellington.

Mike performed fortnightly at Ronnie Scott's for several years with Shorter Than Miles. He plays and writes for the jazz fusion project KGQ with Kieron Garrett, Dave O'Higgins, and Duncan Eagles, and has performed with Acantha Lang and Liane Carroll.

His credits include the Cape Town Jazz Festival, the Jazz Cafe, the Royal Albert Hall, Kingston University teaching, composition work for Ford and the FIA, bass recordings for the documentary Stewart, and musical direction for the live theatre rockumentary Seven Decades.

In the Pete Roth Trio, Mike steps away from the traditional support role of the bass to become an equal melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic partner in the conversation.

Drums

Bill Bruford

Internationally known as a rock musician, drummer Bill Bruford also has deep jazz credentials, having recorded, performed with, or written music for Al Di Meola, the Buddy Rich Orchestra, David Torn, Allan Holdsworth, Tim Garland, Django Bates, Iain Ballamy, and Chris Botti among others.

Early success led into a 40-year career as a bandleader and writer. His groups Bruford and Earthworks helped push advanced harmony in rock, electronics and odd metres in electric jazz, and stylistic invention in acoustic jazz.

Bill's taste for unpredictable live performance has led him to collaborations with leading rock and jazz musicians in a long search for the innovative, the unusual, and the unlikely.

He was voted into Modern Drummer magazine's Hall of Fame in 1990, named by Rolling Stone as one of the greatest drummers of all time in 2016, and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Yes in 2017.

Straddling jazz and rock, his recorded work is documented through Summerfold and Winterfold Records, his YouTube channel, and billbruford.com. In the Pete Roth Trio, that history is placed inside a small, responsive, risk-friendly group.
